Our appearance is undeniably important. We look at ourselves multiple times during the course of a day, from the moment we wake up to when we go to sleep. Every time we enter our bathroom, we look for the mirror. This fascination with ourselves in the mirror began when we first had a sense that we were separate from mother. From around the age of six months to the day you die, you look at yourself in the mirror. So what are you looking for? What are you trying to find? What do you ask yourself? 


My hair is the most important part of my appearance, as it may be for many people. I can change my clothes every day, but my clothes are not part of my body. Our hair is part of our body and a part of who we are. It grows from within us. So are we really looking inside ourselves for something? For an answer? Sometimes we are pleased with what we see and sometimes we are disappointed. It is much like the experiences we have out in the world. But if we find what we’re looking for in the mirror, if we approve of ourselves, then we have the confidence to then carry that image out into our daily interactions. We hold on to that image when we interact with the wife, the boyfriend, the sister, the boss, the coworker... This is who they see too, right? We go back to the mirror to assure ourselves.

Our hairstylist is one of the most important relationships that we have. When we visit our stylist, we face the mirror together. We look at ourselves; we look at each other. Does my stylist see what I see? Do I see what they see? 
Our stylist becomes the temporary architect of our identity, shaping how we will be seen by the world and, perhaps more importantly, how we will see ourselves.
